The NZ health data breach 2026 became one of the country's most heavily covered cyber incidents, and the way the media handled it holds lessons for any comms team that could one day face the same crisis. We analysed 796 media items published between 30 December 2025 and 13 January 2026, after hackers accessed ManageMyHealth, New Zealand's largest patient portal, and demanded a US$60,000 ransom. Coverage ran overwhelmingly negative (average sentiment -0.27), and the sharpest criticism landed on how slowly the breach was disclosed and how little patients were told. - Coverage was almost uniformly hostile: 528 of 796 items were negative and only three were positive, for an average sentiment of -0.27. Print ran hardest at -0.34.
- The breach hit unevenly. More than 80,000 of the roughly 125,000 affected patients were in Northland, where Health NZ relies on ManageMyHealth, turning a national story into a regional trust problem.
- The response drew more fire than the hack. ManageMyHealth waited two days to notify police and did not tell the public until New Year's Eve, and most coverage led with that delay.
